1. Hua Hin

Why go: Hua Hin is a very popular weekend holiday for people from Bangkok and all around great place to live. It retains some of that small beach town feel with all the amenities of a full size city. It’s great location to stop for a couple days and enjoy the atmosphere.

RECOMMENDED BEACHES:

  • Hua Hin Beach: This is the main and most popular beach, stretching for over five kilometers with soft white sand and calm waters suitable for swimming. There are many amenities and restaurants, but it can feel crowded. 

  • Sai Noi Beach: Located a short drive south of the main beach, Sai Noi is known for its soft sand and calm water. It's a good spot for relaxation with beach loungers and restaurants, and a short climb leads to a golden Buddha with views of the coastline.

  • Khao Takiab Beach: Situated at the southern end of the Hua Hin strip near Monkey Mountain, this beach is often quieter and a great place to relax and enjoy seaside seafood.

  • Dolphin Bay: For true solitude, Dolphin Bay is a great option, located about 30 minutes south of Hua Hin. It offers miles of empty beach with a few restaurants and bars. 

RECOMMENDED SITES:

  • Hua Hin Night Market — seafood stalls, local dishes (grilled seafood, pad thai, coconut desserts). Well-rated local vendors cluster there at night.

  • Cicada Market / Tamarind Market — arts, crafts and food — good for dinner/snacks.

  • Hua Hin Railway Station — iconic historic railway building (great photo stop).
    (These are popular, highly rated visitor spots in Hua Hin.)

2. Khao Sam Roi Yot

Why go: Beautiful and quiet beaches, hiking and viewpoints, caves (bring a light!) and the famous cave pavilion (iconic photos). Khao Sam Roi Yot is an perfect place to stop along the way.

Top highlights

  • Phraya Nakhon Cave (Kuha Karuhas Pavilion) — the cave with the royal pavilion lit by a shaft of daylight that is historically significant and very photogenic. Note: the access is from a beach that in accessed by hiking around the point or via a short boat ride. Both are available from the car park.

  • Kaew Cave: is perfect for any aspiring spelunker with it’s several chambers, narrow passages, and total darkness. It’s definitely not for everybody, but the people who enjoy this kind of think will love it. Bring a torch!

  • Laem Sala Beach: the beach that fronts the Phraya Nakhon Cave access and a good place to relax before/after the cave walk.

  • Sam Roi Yat Beach: a beautiful beach full of iconic palm trees that is serene and quiet

Local foods to try near Khao Sam Roi Yot / Hua Hin

  • Fresh grilled seafood (shrimp, squid, fish) at seaside stalls. Local markets and seaside restaurants near Laem Sala and Prachuap towns have grilled seafood and local curries.

3. Chumphon

Why go: A quiet city surrounded by natural beauty. With many beautiful beaches, island hopping, outdoor activites, and markets with local culture. It’s a great stop for those seeking quiet Thai charm before heading to the Gulf Islands or the more populous locations. 

Nature & Outdoors

  • Khao Matsee Viewpoint: Panoramic views of the coast, stunning at sunset.

  • Khao Dinsor: Famous for sunrise views

  • Beaches: Relax at Thung Wua Laen, Thung Makham Noi, or Ao Bo Mao for sunbathing and swimming.

  • Koh Ngam Yai & Koh Ngam Noi: Excellent for snorkeling and diving.

  • Koh Khai (Egg Island): A unique island known for its distinctive rock formation.

  • Chumphon Islands Marine Park: Explore numerous islands like Langkajeu and Maprao. 

Culture & History

  • Chumphon Night Market: Sample local street food like grilled meats, fresh juices, and Thai desserts.

Moving Beyond

  • Ferry to Islands: Chumphon is a gateway to Koh Tao, with ferries departing from Thung Makham Noi Pier.

4. Ranong

Why go?: What makes Ranong great, is that it’s completely authentic. Away from the tourist trail, it’s a less-crowded atmosphere, with a cultural blend (Thai, Chinese, Burmese), delicious local food, natural hot springs, beautiful islands and is a unique gateway to Myanmar, offering a genuine experiences away from mass tourism. 

What to do?

Raksa Warin Hot Spring: A natural thermal spring park with healing waters, featuring free public pools, paid private baths, and foot baths (Waer temperatures reaching up to 65°C).  

Laem Son National Park: A national park with extensive coastline, pine forests and several islands

  • Koh Kamtok (Kamtok Island): Home to Ao Khao Kwai, known for its beautiful white sand and clear waters, accessible by boat from Bang Baen Beach within the park.

  • Ao Khao Kwai (Buffalo Bay): A tranquil, hidden gem on Koh Kamtok with fine white sand.

  • Baan Talay Nok (Ranong): A local fishing village within the park area offering authentic experiences, seafood, and tours to islands like Koh Kamtok, perfect for a quiet, local vibe. 

Culture & City Life

  • Rattana Rangsarn Palace: A reconstruction of the palace where King Rama V stayed. 

  • Walking Street: A great place to experience local food and atmosphere, though it is limited to Friday and Saturday evenings.

  • Riverside Cafes: Enjoy local coffee with unique seating like boats or hammocks at spots near rivers. 

Where to stay?

  • Accomodations are plentiful in the city of chumpon, but for a full immersive experience you can rent bungalows in the National Park

5. Phuket

Why go?: I don’t think we even need to mention, do we? Several of the most beautiful beaches in the world along with activites and entertainment for people of every style, every budget, and every interest 24/7.

Beaches and islands

  • Beaches: Relax or participate in water sports at popular beaches like Patong Beach, Kata Beach, Karon Beach, and Nai Harn Beach.

  • Island Hopping: Take boat tours to nearby islands, such as James Bond Island in Phang Nga Bay or the Phi Phi Islands.

  • Diving: Go to the Similan Islands for diving, known for its whale sharks. 

Culture and attractions

  • Temples: Visit the Big Buddha for panoramic views or explore Wat Chalong, the largest Buddhist temple on the island.

  • Phuket Old Town: Wander through the colorful Sino-Portuguese architecture and shop at local markets.

  • Phromthep Cape: Head here for a scenic viewpoint, especially at sunset. 

Adventure and nightlife

  • Elephant Sanctuaries: Interact with elephants responsibly at an ethical sanctuary, such as Elephant Jungle Sanctuary Phuket.

  • Nightlife: Experience the vibrant nightlife on Bangla Road in Patong.

  • Markets: Shop for souvenirs and street food at night markets like Naka Weekend Market or Chillva Market.


6. Phang Nga

Why go?: It’s absolutely beautiful. Even if you are not a nature lover, this is a stop worth making.

What to do there?

Phang Nga Bay: Consisting of dozens of islands extending from the Andaman Sea, longtail boats give tours weaving through the islands.. It is incredibly beautiful and is most famously known for the James Bong Island (from “The Man with the Golden Gun”, but the entire national park is incredible.

Koh Panyee: Included in most Phang Nga bay tours, this Muslim fishing community lives on a floating village famously with their floating football pitch. Mors tours will start for you to wander through the community.

Samet Nangshe Viewpoint: Breathtaking panoramic views over the bay, especially at sunrise/sunset. 

Phung Chang Cave: Get a guided tour of the cave via canoe, raft, and wading through the waters.

White Water Rafting: Experience thrilling rides on the Song Phraek River. 

7. Khao Sok / Rajjaprabha Dam

Why go?: A quiet, relaxed national park that is surrounded by dynamic beauty. The limestone cliffs rising from emerald water (resembling Halong Bay) are in impressive sight, with several outdoors activies nearby catering to the visitors whom leave the typical tourist trail and make it to this incredible place.

Khao Sok National Park:

  • Cheow Lan Lake: Is the reservoir created by the Rajjaprabha Dam. The area is famous for its dramatic limestone cliffs rising from emerald green waters.

Key Activites when there:

  • Long-tail boat tours take you through the lake to get a better view of the limestone cliffs emerging from the waters.

  • Bamboo rafting are available that can take you to the otherswise unreachable “hidden spots”

  • Visiting Pakarang Cave is known for it’s Coral formations that sparkle under light, hence the name “Coral Cave”

  • Sunrise/Sunset Cruises Also work well for wildlife spotting. 

Unique Stays Opportunity: We recommend staying in floating raft houses on the lake for an immersive experience.

8. Khao Samui

Why go? Arguably one of the best places to vist in Thailand. You can spend several days or even weeks here.

Beaches & Relaxation

  • Chaweng Beach: Center of tourism. It’s the busiest beach but great for water sports, bars, and tourist nightlife. 

  • Bo Phut / Maenam Beach: Quieter beaches, offering a more relaxed vibe. 

  • Crystal Bay/Silver Beach: Considered to be the most beautiful beach, though can be crowded.  

Nature & Adventure

  • Ang Thong National Marine Park: Day trips for kayaking, snorkeling, hiking to viewpoints, and exploring lagoons. 

  • Na Muang Waterfalls: Multi-tiered waterfalls with natural pools for swimming. 

  • Elephant Kingdom Sanctuary: A true rescue for elephants. A great place to see and interact with elephants by people who obviously care for their welbeing. . 

Entertainment

  • Fisherman's Village (Bophut): Charming area with boutiques, cafes, restaurants, and a popular night market. 

  • Muay Thai Fights: Watch a traditional Thai boxing match. 

  • ATV Tours: The vast majority of Samui is mountainous, and several operators offer ATV tours into the mountains to explore the jungle, waterfalls, viewpoints etc. Note: For the best experience look for a smaller tour company. The large ones use the same route and generally run long trains of riders.

Where to stay: Chaweng Beach is the center of tourism on Samui, and also the location that all locals avoid. Any other beach located on the North end of the island will provide a more “real” experiece while still being beautiful beaches with close proximity to restaurants and activites.

About the Ferries: Getting to and from Koh Samui requires taking a ferry. There are two companies, Sea Tran is nicer and far more popular choice, but also commonly booked out. Raja is about two minutes farther down the road and caters more to trucks and shipping, but usually can accept motorbikes without reservation or much of a wait. Both have food on board for the 90 minute ride, but minimal.

9. Ban Phum Riang

Why go? A relaxed town known for it’s Thai Silk production. Despite not being a must-see location, it serves as a convenient rest point as required.

What’s there:

  • Beaches: Niyom Beach and Laem Sai Beach are local to the area and commonly used by locals and fisherman alike

  • Pracha Rat Floating Market: Open every Sunday morning, the market offers local food, fruits, snacks, and souvenirs with cheap boat rides along the canal

  • Grand Canyon Tha Chang: A natural, picturesque spot formed from an old clay pit, offering dramatic cliff views and photo opportunities.

Considerations: Ban Phum Riang is convenient place to stay, especially when make a an afternoon departure from Samui, however if you have the time and don’t mind the ride, Saphli Beach (next on the list) is overall a nicer place to spend some time.

10. Saphli Beach

Why go? Located just outside of Chumphon, you’ll find fine white sand, calm, shallow waters ideal for swimming and a quiet atmosphere. A relaxing escape with good local food and service, perfect for families or couples seeking a hidden gem away from crowds.

  • Beautiful & Safe Beach: Enjoy fine, white sand and a gentle slope into clear water, making it great for swimming.

  • Relaxing Atmosphere: It's a quiet, less-crowded spot compared to major tourist hubs, offering tranquility.

  • Authentic Thai Experience: A chance to experience a genuine slice of Thai coastal life with friendly staff and delicious local cuisine. 

11. Baan Krood Beach

Why go? Long, quiet stretches of sand, authentic Thai culture, fresh seafood, and natural beauty, ideal for relaxation all without the usual tourist crowds.

Key Reasons to Visit:

  • Peaceful & Uncrowded: It offers a truly authentic, less-touristed Thai beach experience, especially during weekdays, with vast stretches of empty sand.

  • Natural Beauty: Enjoy beautiful scenery, from palm-lined beaches to lush hills, with opportunities for seaside walks and stunning sunsets.

  • Wat Tang Sai temple: Located on the hill top, you get spectacular coastal views along with unique stained-glass art, plus a large Buddha statue.

  • Activities: You can snorkel around Talu Island, try squid fishing with locals, or join in with beach volleyball

Where to get great food: Find cheap, fresh seafood at local restaurants near the Big Buddha.

12. Prachuap Khiri Khan

Why go? A peaceful, authentic Thai coastal experience with stunning bays, fresh seafood, friendly locals, and fascinating sights, all at a lower cost than typical tourist hubs, offering a genuine glimpse into Thai life away from overwhelming crowds. .

Top Things to Do:

  • Ao Manao Beach: A beautiful, quiet beach within a military base, perfect for relaxing.

  • Waghor Aquarium: Despite being an older facility, the aquarium is an affordable way to get inside to Thai marine life. With themed zones and rare species.

  • Local Markets: Experience daily life at the town's food markets.

In case you missed it:

  • Khao Sam Roi Yot National Park (nearby): If you didn’t go on the way down, your about to pass it on the way up… 

13. Cha-Am

Why go? A common get away from people from Bangkok, Cha-Am is a smaller beach town just outside of Hua Hin. A common location for people to stay while close enough to visit the larger city attractions.

Key Reasons to Visit Cha-Am:

  • Peaceful & Relaxing: It offers a calmer vibe than (relatively) bustling Hua Hin, perfect for people who prefer the quiet.

  • Affordable Local Experience: Popular with Thai families, it offers budget-friendly food, especially fresh seafood stalls lining the beach.

  • Beautiful Beachfront: Enjoy long walks, sunrises, and relaxing with Thai massages on the sand.

  • Easy Access: A short, convenient trip from Bangkok and easily reachable from Hua Hin.

Seafood Lovers: There are several local seafood at beachfront food stalls along even the quietest of beaches.
