 DRIVING LICENSE TESTs

What you need to know

There are two types of tests that are required as part of the process to get a Thai Driver’s license. The first is a timed 50 point theory test, and then second is a practical driving test for cars and motorcycles that is performed on a closed course at the Department of Transport.

Which test would you like to know about?

 50 Point Theory Exam

Passing Requirements

The Department of transport theory test is made up of 50 multiple-choice questions of which you need 45 correct (90%) to pass. The test is done on a computer at the DLT office and you have 60 minutes, although most people finish in under 30 minutes so we do not recommend rushing.

  • The questions are random so no two people will have the same test questions.

  • You are able to go back and review/change answers before submitting to receive your final score.

Question Categories

The questions come from five main areas. It is noteworthy that the penalties and fines section is generally found to be the hardest as it requires knowledge of specific Thai rules and fines that do not relate to your native country.

  • Traffic signs (≈30%)

  • Penalties & fines (≈20%)

  • Traffic laws & right-of-way (≈20%)

  • Speed limits & road markings (≈15%)

  • Driving safety & vehicle basics (≈15%)

English Translation

The test is available in either Thai or English. It is important to note that the English translation can be awkward or unclear, so it is best to focus on the meaning of the question rather than exact wording itself.

Commonly difficult Questions

Watch out for:

  • Traffic signs with Thai text (have to recognize be sight alone)

  • Similar-looking traffic signs (requires attention to details)

  • Speed limits (urban and highway limits)

  • Alcohol limits (0.05% BAC for non commercial drivers)

  • Right-of-way rules (first person has right away)

  • Emergency vehicles (require moving to the left)

  • Exact fines and penalties (must memorize)

Test preparation

Below are two websites that have created practice tests based off the actual Department of Transport theory test. These are a great way to test your knowledge and identify any areas to focus on before taking the your actual scored exam.

What if you don’t pass the test?

If you fail (scoring below 45) you are able to return another day to take the test again, and there is no limit to how many attempts you can take.

  • If the test it taken on a day we are scheduled at the DLT already there is no additional charge

  • If you would like to request an agent to assist you personally for a retest there is a 500 baht charge

 Car Driving Test

About the test

The practical driving test is done on a closed course at the DLT, not on public roads. The test itself takes about 15–20 minutes, but the wait overall can be longer depending on how many people are taking the test that day.

  • A car will be provided for you. However, you can use your own vehicle if you prefer, presuming it is registered and insured.

Who has to take the driving test?

  • New license applications will be required to take the car driving test.

  • Foreign license conversions generally are exempt and not required, though this is ultimately up to the discretion of the DLT staff.

what you need to know

  • Straight Drive + Stop: Drive forward and stop stop the car entirely within the designated box.

  • Parallel Parking: Successfully parallel park within the parking spot designated by the cones.

    • It is a relatively tight space, roughly 50% longer than the vehicle itself

    • There is a limit of 7 gear changes to park successfully (Ex. Changing from reverse to forward is one gear change)

    • Your tires must be within 25cm of the curb when parked.

  • Three-Point Turn: Turn the car around 180 degrees in a tight space using forward and reverse.

  • Drive straight in Reverse: Back up in a narrow lane without crossing lines.

  • Hill Start: Stop the vehicle on a slope (engage the brake fully) and then continue forward without rolling back excessively.

    • This is much easier with automatics.

    • We would caution against using your own vehicle if it is a manual transition

 Motorbike Driving Test

About the test

The practical driving test is done on a closed course at the DLT, not on public roads. The test itself takes about 15–20 minutes, but the wait overall can be longer depending on how many people are taking the test that day.

  • A motorbike will be provided for you. However, you can use your own bike if you prefer, presuming it is registered and insured.

Who has to take the driving test?

  • New license applications will be required to take the motorbike driving test.

  • Foreign license conversions without a motorcycle endorsement are required to take the motobike driving test.

  • Foreign license conversions that have a motorcycle endorsement generally are exempt and not required to take the test, though this is ultimately up to the discretion of the DLT staff.

what you need to know

  • Drive on a narrow beam: Drive forward along a beam without putting your feet down or falling off.

    • The beam is roughly 30cm wide

    • This is one of the most common failure points, so we recommend to practice driving slowly and controlled in a straight line before hand.

  • Figure 8: Drive and perform a figure eight maneuver within he designated area without putting your feet down.

    • Remember to look where you want to go, the bike (and your balance) will naturally follow.

    • This is the other most common failure point, so practice in advance is recommended.

  • Slalom: Keep a steady controlled speed and weave through the cones putting your feet down or hitting any cones.

  • Emergency stop: Accelerate up to roughly 30-40kmph and then stop within the designated box while using both brakes smoothly.
